Combating the Germs Kids Encounter
If you’re a parent, now more than ever you’re thinking about your children’s health and safety. In a world where the news reports all sorts of harmful things that can happen to them from illness and beyond, your awareness of how to keep them happy and healthy is raised tenfold. That’s why Co-Owner of Breathe.Move.Eat and Certified Nutrition Coach Leonardo Delgado tells us how you can optimize your children’s diet to improve their immune system and overall well-being.
When it comes to an immune boosting diet Delgado says, “Children should be exposed to a wide variety of foods, which allows them to cover all their bases in terms of macro and micronutrients.” Having a wide variety of whole foods, such as meats, fruits, and vegetables helps improve overall health and keep the immune system running at tip-top shape.
If you want your child to be healthy, it’s your responsibility to be a good influence. Delgado says the best way to support your child’s health is by being the example. If you make sure to focus on your health and practice good habits, you will not only help create a positive lifestyle for your children, but help them be better prepared for life. As far as the immune system goes, he says, “Ensuring your child has enough sleep and spends enough time outdoors is a great place to start.” Sourcing vitamin D from the sun and making sure to get quality and regular sleep is imperative to immune health, mood, and overall physical and cognitive performance.
Last but not least, Delgado gives us a sure way to maintain good health and keep ourselves and our children safe from the germs we face every single day. He says, “This is pretty straightforward: exercise regularly, get enough sleep, maintain a healthy weight, don’t smoke, don’t drink alcohol, and eat enough protein, healthy fats, fruits, and vegetables.” For many of us, this is easier said than done. However, when it comes to your children, being willing to make tough choices to keep them happy, healthy, and able to live a long life is worth the cost.
