Headaches & Heartbeats

Avoiding Migraine Triggers This Valentine’s Day

Migraines are not just headaches; they are intense, pulsating pains that typically strike one side of your head. Accompanying symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, and heightened sensitivity to light and sound. If you’ve experienced a migraine, you know how debilitating it can be.

With the ultimate holiday of love approaching, you want to look and feel your best. A migraine can block any night of fun and romance. So how can you enjoy your love holiday if you are prone to migraines? One of the first steps is knowing what can set them off.

Various factors can trigger these intense episodes. Common culprits include stress, hormonal fluctuations, irregular sleep patterns, changes in the weather, strong odors, intense physical exertion, and bright flashing lights. Additionally, what you consume can play a significant role in triggering migraines.

Several types of foods and drinks are known to provoke migraines. Be wary of fresh-baked goods like sourdough bread and donuts, as well as aged cheeses such as gorgonzola and brie. Processed foods, including canned soups and deli meats, can also be problematic. Salty snacks, particularly potato chips, and pizza or other tomato-based products are potential triggers, as are various dairy products. Artificial sweeteners, preservatives, and food additives should be approached with caution, too. Finally, don’t forget that coffee, certain caffeinated beverages, and alcohol—especially wine, scotch, and champagne—can contribute to the onset of a migraine.

To minimize your risk of experiencing a migraine, it’s wise to avoid these dietary triggers. However, it’s equally important to maintain a regular eating schedule. Skipping meals can provoke migraines, so aim to have at least three substantial, healthy meals each day, supplemented by light snacks.

By being mindful of your diet and lifestyle choices, you can significantly reduce the likelihood of experiencing that intense migraine pain. Take charge of your health, and manage those triggers for a more comfortable life. For the best methods for controlling your migraines, always seek the advice of your medical provider.
